The nation turns 50 today.
The United States has grown to over ten million people, spreading across 25 states and territories, extending from the Atlantic to Pacific oceans. America’s sense of nationhood has taken root, its canopy spreading over vast realms of forest, prairie, mountains, deserts, streams and rivers.
The United States federal government is marking its 25th year in Washington, D.C., and has seen five presidents. Now, literally, a new generation of Americans has taken up the reins.
